The connecting rod of IC engine is used to connect the reciprocating piston and rotating crank. The one end of the connecting rod which is connected to gudgeon pin is called the ‘small end’ because of its smaller size. The other end which is connected to the crank pin is bigger in diameter, hence known as the ‘big end’.
Studies have shown that stresses in the connecting rod are four times as large in the plane of rotation as at right angles. Therefore the connecting rod must be stronger in the plane of rotation. Connecting rods are manufactured as an I-section with the web provided in the plane of motion.
