The various energy resources can be classified as
1. Primary: The energy resources which are directly obtained from the environment are called primary energy resources. Example. Fossil fuels like lignite and crude oil, solar energy, wind energy, nuclear fuel (uranium, thorium), wind energy, geothermal energy, tidal energy etc.
Secondary: The resources which are derived from primary energy resources are called secondary energy resources. Example. Electric energy, gasoline, diesel etc.
2. Renewable: Renewable resources are those which can be replaced and we can use them again and again. Example. Hydel power, wind, solar, geothermal and tidal energy.
Non-renewable: The resources which can’t be replaced once they are used are known as non-renewable energy resources. Example. Fossil fuels, nuclear fuel etc.
3. Conventional: The conventional resources include fossil fuels, Hydel power and nuclear fuel.
Non-conventional: These include solar, geothermal, tidal, wind and biomass energy.
4. Commercial fuel: These fuels are mainly used in industries. These are coal, petroleum products, electricity and natural gas.
Non-commercial fuels: These fuels are used for domestic purposes. These include cow dung, wood and agricultural wastes.
